False Bay Artifacts

Slide2.jpg

This is a collection of fragments of ground slate tools.  Most are likely the remains of knives, used for filleting/cutting fish.  Artifact F is a ground slate projectile point that was probably hafted on a harpoon.  Ground slate technology of this kind is first used around 3500 years ago, and become increasingly common after that.  The abundance of ground slate in this one collection suggests the midden may be between younger than 2500 years ago.

The closest known source of slate is the head of Jervis Inlet.
