Car Vandalism and theft in French Creek
Posting on behalf of our French creek Representative Peter Lironi 250 927 0642
From the French Creek Harbour Manager:
Unfortunately, there have been a run of thefts and vandalism recently too vehicles parked in our parking lot . We do report all thefts to the RCMP, and we have provided videos multiple times as well to assist in catching these people , I think they do what they can, and the law allows. Ask residents to petition their local MLA to change the laws making it easier for law enforcement to have these people punished and maybe we will see less thefts.
These thefts have all happened at night , as the thieves like to operate under the cover of darkness and when the Harbour is very quiet.
We at the Harbour Authority have taken some steps to help curb these thefts , we have installed better lighting in the lot, notified the RCMP of the recent activity and asked for more frequent patrols .
We are also currently upgrading our camera system to include licence plate cameras to record every vehicle entering and leaving our facility as well as more higher resolution cameras to give better coverage of the parking lot , in hopes that we can identify the persons committing these crimes. We do currently have 38 cameras that record 24/7 but they don’t see every space in the parking lot, and this is why we are expanding the system to provide better coverage. We are not alone as many public parking lots are suffering the same issues as us during these times of increased crime in the district . There has been discussion about a security company doing patrols at night , we have tried this in the past and its had little to no impact on the crimes. We will continue to make improvements to make our facility safer place to leave vehicles for long periods of time.

Vehicle theft & vandalism in French Creek marina parking lot
I don't see how cameras with face recognition will help the situation as most of these reprehensible thieves wear hoodies so they can't be apprehended. I for one have medical appointments in Nanaimo & Victoria & would be very compromised getting off the Lasqueti ferry to travel to these specialist appointments & discover my vehicle gone or damaged & undrivable. I believe a fenced & gated parking lot locked at night may help discourage these thefts. For several years a band of hooligans removed many catalytic converters from several Lasquetians vehicles at great expense & inconvenience...this is absolutely unacceptable to keep happening. We need immediate action to stop this...it's been going far too long.
