September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and Orange Shirt Day

Next Friday, September 30, is National Dav for Truth and Reconciliation. It was first observed last year, and this is its second anniversary.

It is a day set out in compliance for one of the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. It is largely to recognize survivors of the residential school system, and to remember the children who never returned to their home and family.

September 30 is also Orange Shirt Day.

This is a good day for new =to educate ourselves and reflect on the history of our relationship with Indigenous and Aboriginal Peoples, and mostly how we can contribute towards Reconciliation, or at least recognition.

Indigenous Canada is a 12-lesson Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) from the Faculty of Native Studies that explores the different histories and contemporary perspectives of Indigenous peoples living in Canada. From an Indigenous perspective, this course explores complex experiences Indigenous peoples face today from a historical and critical perspective highlighting national and local Indigenous-settler relations. It's available free, is self-[ace, and should take about 21 hours to complete. I found it interesting and useful, and am thinking of taking it again.

If you have other sources or resources that are interesting or useful, please share them. Thanks to you all. Peter

great, long film

We Can't Make the Same Mistake Twice is an epic, 2h 42 minute film by Alanis Obomsawin on the multi-year, now going on multi-decade-long fight by Cindy Blackstock and the Child and Family Caring Society of Canada to get our federal government to treat First Nations children and their families who livieon reserves fairly and equally. It streams free from the NFB, and is well worth watching. It is inspirational, and also a bitt dispiriting. https://www.nfb.ca/film/we_can_t_make_the_same_mistake_twice/
