What happened in May at the Judy?
Throughout May work has continued on the Judith Fisher Centre’s infrastructure. The heart of the JFC’s infrastructure is located in the basement of the services building and includes: the boiler for the hot water heating system and the firewood storage area; batteries and inverters for the electrical micro-grid; and the water filter system (coming soon) for the domestic water in the buildings. From the basement the piping branches off to the health centre and Barb’s cottage. Additional cottages can be connected as needed in the future. Since the third week in May, the septic system, that is located at the back of the property, has been working. All of this work needed to be finished before installation of the water filtration system; rough-in wiring; insulation and drywall in the health centre could be started. These will be on the fall work schedule.
Summer means Fundraising
While we have received money and material donations from companies, it is the residents of Lasqueti who provide the majority of the money needed to complete this project. Not to mention all of the volunteer hours that are generously given.
At the beginning of this project the members of the Last Resort Society made a decision not to borrow money for the building of the health centre and cottages. While they knew that it would take longer to raise the funds for construction they also knew that having to pay back a mortgage could create other problems in the future. So far the community has raised 70% of the construction budget. Your participation in any of the summer events will provide the funds for the fall and winter construction projects.
