Advice re. Invasive Plant (Daphne Laureola)
We've identified an infestation of Daphne Laureola (known as Spurge Laurel) that was previously planted on our property. This plant is invasive and extremely toxic. Does anyone have experience with eradicating this plant on Lasqueti? We want to make sure that we get this removed before birds spread the seeds around.
Here are some additional resources we've found about this plant:
- Worksafe Toxic Plant Warning (PDF)
- Saltspring Island Conservancy datasheet on Spurge Laurel (PDF)
- Garry Oak Ecosystem Recovery Team Best Practices for Daphne Laureola (PDF)
- Canadian Forest Service Natural Resource Notes on Daphne Laureola (PDF)
It appears that once uprooted or cut, they will have to be taken off-island in order to be properly disposed due to the toxicity.
Peace,
David & Laura

Eradication Progress
We uprooted around 50 pounds of Spurge over the weekend, and bagged it to dry it out in preparation for disposal. The footprint of the infestation has now been reduced from over five hundred sq feet to well under a hundred sq feet.
We're testing a few alternative approaches to controlling this invasive plant based on techniques that have worked with Scotch broom, and we'll keep an eye on how well they work over the coming year.
