911 Petition

A key concern voiced by many community members in various forums over the past several week is the lack of community consultation on whether Lasqueti should become a member of NI911, and whether we want to adopt the proposed house numbering scheme. One thing set in motion at tonight's community meeting is a petition asking the PRRD board of directors to rescind its Dec 17 motion to to go ahead with 911 and house numbering.

This petition is not a petition for or against 911. The goal is simply to put the brakes on the 911 process, to give the community a chance to review issues and options and come to a decision we can feel comfortable with. If you believe that Lasquetians should have a say in this matter, please sign the copy of the petition at the Post Office, or let Merrick know ASAP via email that you support the petition. The full text of the petition is attached. Merrick has agreed to present the petition to the PRRD board and to put the motion on the agenda for the board meeting this coming Friday.

Please also take the time to write to the Honourable Minister Coralee Oakes, our Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, and let her know that you oppose the way PRRD dealt with the 911 issue and would like to see the process put on hold so proper public consultation can take place. See David & Laura’s post at http://lasqueti.ca/node/4857 for more details and contact information. If the PRRD board of directors refuses to rescind the Dec 17 motion, the minister is our only other option for halting the 911 process.
