BC ARTS AND CULTURE WEEK WORKSHOP SERIES
April 21-26
SURFACE TECHNIQUES ON HANDMADE PAPER
with Dorothy Field (call Sophia to register)
Saturday April 21, 10-4pm, at The Arts Centre,
$35 includes materials
We'll be experimenting with surface treatments for handmade paper: starching, crumpling, burnishing, and adding imagery using stenciling, potato printing, applying Xeroxed imagery, etc. Many of these are contemporary adaptations of traditional Japanese techniques. The techniques are very straight forward as well as being very useful for changing the look and feel of the paper for both two-dimensional and three-dimensional applications. The papers we will produce are excellent for cards, book covers, sculpture and more. This is a great chance to play around and experiment.
Students should bring the following:
-big cheap brush for starch
-smaller cheap brushes for mixing pigment
-stencil brush if you have one
-paring knife
-a potato
-xeroxed images, xerox transfers, polaroid transfers, etc preferably on handmade paper or machine-made paper that is not crisp
-variety of papers to experiment with - it's possible to try almost anything
-anything that can work as a stencil
-spoon for burnishing
Instructor will supply:
-tapioca starch, konnyaku, graphite, dry pigments, acrylic medium, PVA, mid-weight strong Japanese paper for starching, Crisco, acetate
MUSIC OF THE SPHERES-PART 2
with Sara de Rose
Sunday April 22, 1pm-4pm. Community Hall.
$10
This workshop will focus on the astronomy part of the Music of the Spheres, showing you how to find the sun, moon and planets in the Zodiac, so that you can make your own horoscope by reading the sky. We will also study music theory, each participant personifying a musical note and playing a copper pipe. Then, looking at recurring patterns, you will understand why music and astronomy were sister subjects in the ancient world.
The students of False Bay School have been studying the Music of the Spheres for two months and will be performing an educational play for the community on April 27. Because there are so few students in the school, I am hoping to have the participants of this workshop take small parts in the play. Lines and actions are minimal and a commitment of coming to two practices at the school during the week of April 23-27 will be enough to create a wonderful co-production with
the kids. Please join in! The cast needs another 10-12 people.

Create a hand-painted wine glass that will be both a piece of art as well as a nice addition to your glassware collection. Or, bring a single-pane window of your choice and we will paint an image or an abstract scene on it, using permanent Vitrail glass paints which give a stained glass look.
Instructor will supply wine glasses as well as several small wooden-sash windows. Ambitious participants can do both projects!
