The Last Resort Work Party Success
Despite the Nanaimo forecast calling for cold weather and snow a beautiful day prevailed for the ground breaking work party at the newly acquired lands of The Last Resort Society. This land situated beside the free store will be the future site of The Lasqueti Health Centre. This facility is the first phase in a multi phase project that encompasses many aspects of health for Lasqueti Island residents. The Health centre will provide for one examination room, a respite bed, an office for administration and sleeping quarters for our nurse. Lasqueti has been fortunate to have a part time nurse visit our island for the last number of years but as our island grows so does the health care needs of our community, which is why we initiated this project.
As of today, we have prepared a road into the cleared building site. With the help of our many fabulous volunteers we have pulled much of the brush and debris from the forest in preparation for chipping. We will do our best to avoid extensive burning but this all depends on volunteer effort of pulling and chipping and we know that at some point a burn will have to happen. So please, please, please, when the time does come, do not tar and feather us. we are doing the best we can with the resources and energy available to us.
Next on our list of "to do's" is the waterline, septic infrastructure and building foundation. Not necessarily in that order but coming up in the near future just the same. Given this is primarily a volunteer effort we welcome any labour or building materials you can offer. There is even an opportunity for tax receipts if need be.
