Climate Change presentation and discussion

Event Date:
Sunday, August 14, 2011 - 1:00pm - 3:30pm

To cap off the climate change work we've been doing this term, we are having a get together at the Arts Center on Sunday, August 14th from 1:00 to 3:30pm.
The event will start out with a presentation by our very own Joseph Fall about a new tool available to us to help plan changes around our GHG emissions.
We will then have a discussion around how we as a community would like to carry on this important work and how the next Local Trust Committee can help. This discussion will help inform a write up I would like to do as my advice to the incoming Trustees.
This event, like all the climate change workshops we've put on during this term, will include a local food potluck. And what a good time of the year for such things!
So bring out your thinking cap, idealistic thoughts and a some locally grown yumminess.

Here's more information about Joseph's presentation:

Whatever your thoughts about climate change, we can all agree that
reducing fossil fuel use, and thus Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions is a
necessary step. In fact, BC's Green Communities Act (Bill 27)
requires that every community in the province create a plan to reduce
its GHG emissions.
The first step in reducing emissions is to create an "inventory" - how
much GHG do we produce and where does it come from? The LTC and APC
have started this initial step on Lasqueti with the GHG inventory
survey completed last year. Now we are evaluating a software tool
called "GHGProof" to help us complete our inventory and track our GHG
"footprint" over time.
GHGProof is a tool designed to help communities and local government
explore and analyze the impacts of land-use planning on energy use and
GHG emissions. We might use GHGProof to set GHG targets, develop
strategies to achieve those targets, and to help evaluate development
proposals and design community plans.
GHGProof is a simple spreadsheet model that computes GHG emissions
from a set of basic data about energy use and lifestyle patterns in
the community. A major advantage of this model is that its assumptions
are fully "transparent" - the data it uses and the calculations it
makes are available to all to see and evaluate and modify. It is a
great tool for "what-if" analysis and can help us envision the long-
term impacts of short-term planning decisions. The tool is also open
source, thus free for us to use, and designed to be adapted to a
specific local context.
On Sunday Aug. 14, the LTC will be hosting a presentation of
GHGProof. Come out and learn how GHG inventories are calculated.
Engage in a discussion about the relative merits of the various
assumptions being made by the model. Help us identify some of the
ways Lasqueti can reduce its GHG footprint.
