regarding Ms. Maartman
Ms. Maartman ran for the NDP in the last campaign (2008) and finished a strong second next to incumbent, Mr. Lunney.
In 2008, candidates from the NDP, Green, and Liberal parties came to Lasqueti for an all-candidates meeting (notably, Mr. Lunney refused to participate).
Ms. Maartman contacted me a few weeks ago and asked if someone would organize another all-candidates meeting on Lasqueti. Neither Peter nor I felt like doing the organizing for the 10 or so people who would likely show up, but her taking time to contact us, I felt, tells a profound story about her commitment to representing even the "fringe" in the Nanaimo-Alberni riding.
The Liberal candidate in this riding got so few votes in 2008 as to be a throw away.
The Green candidate in the last election was a very strong candidate, and the kind of person I'd like to see represent me in Ottawa - I don't know the current Green candidate.
Although I am inclined to vote Green, Ms. Maartman will get my vote this year, partially in an ABC strategic vote (Anybody But Conservative), but also because she impressed me at the last all-candidates meeting, and has re-enforced that impression by offering to take time out of her busy campaign schedule to come see us again.
