The purpose:
The purpose of the Mt. Trematon Restoration Work Party(ies) is to get some help putting protective fencing around young tree saplings. The trees on the reserve do not have a chance against the sheep. The hope is that if these trees are protected and able to grow to three or four feet, they will escape the grazing pressure from the sheep. In terms of biodiversity, and ecological integrity, the sheep on the nature reserve are an invasive species. The tree protection method, is one way in which we can manage this invasive species.
Here's how we do it:
We drive a cedar stake or spike into the ground with a sledgehammer beside a tree. In some spots, we may need to use a pry/crow bar to make a pilot hole for the stake or spike. Then we measure and cut a piece of stucco wire with the snips, to go around the tree. We fasten the wire to the stake with cable ties.
Vision:
ITF Nature reserves have management plans that include the long-term vision of the reserve and were written with input from community members. The Mount Trematon Nature Reserve Management Plan can be found at: http://www.islandstrustfund.bc.ca/pdf/itfmgmtplanmttrematon.pdf
