The Islands Trust Area is one of Canada’s biodiversity hotspots, home to over 300 species at risk — including owls, bats, snakes, frogs, butterflies, rare plants, mosses, and lichens.
With over 65% of the land privately owned, residents play a crucial role in protecting local ecosystems from the growing pressures of climate change, habitat loss, and invasive species.
This session will help you:
-Recognize species at risk that may be living on your property
-Learn practical ways to support and restore habitat
-Get inspired by real examples of community-led stewardship
Presenters:
Erica Wheeler, Registered Biologist and Coordinator of the Islands Trust Conservancy’s Species at Risk Program.
Lou Skinner, Coordinator of Gabriola Land & Trails Trust’s Nature Stewards Program
