Public Hearing continuation

The Lasqueti Island Local Trust Committee (LTC) will resume the Public Hearing regarding proposed Bylaw 104, Connected Coast (fibre optic cable project) on February 27 at 1 PM, via Zoom.

For members of the public who wish to attend but have challenges attending electronically, I stated at the Feb. 10 meeting that I would be available at the Health Centre to facilitate this. In my enthusiasm, I forgot that the nursing clinic will be happing at that time and location.

I apologize for making a statement that I cannot follow through with. However, if members of the public have challenges accessing the Zoom meeting, please contact me, and I will work to arrange another venue. Also, if any member of the public is willing to help me with this, please let me know. Ideally, if there is interest, I’d like to have a plan set up no later than Monday, Feb. 24th.

Can I still submit comments to the Public Hearing? Yes.

Staff will be monitoring the northphsub [at] islandstrust [dot] bc [dot] ca email up until just before the Public Hearing closes on Feb 27th.

Through the Chair, staff will let trustees know before she calls for three times for final submissions. Staff will forward submissions to the LTC via email, and all Trustees will take the time to read them before the close of the public hearing.

Canada Post mail received in our Gabriola office by February 26, 2025 will be scanned and circulated to the LTC. Write to: Islands Trust Northern Office, 700 North Road, Gabriola, BC V0R 1X3

Any submissions received after the Public Hearing is closed will not be circulated as Trustees cannot consider public comments or speak to their constituents on this topic after the close of the public hearing.

For clarity, the decision is made by the three voting members of the Lasqueti Local Trust Committee (LTC), which currently is comprised of Tim Peterson, Mikaila Lironi, and our Chair, Tobi Elliott.

While members of the public are invited to provide input at the Public Hearing, this decision is not a referendum, and there is no opportunity for the public to vote.

Following the conclusion of the Public Hearing on February 27, the LTC will hold a Special Meeting at approximately 3 PM to consider the application, and may vote at that time, although there are other possibilities, such as deferring or requesting additional information.

Both the remainder of the Public Hearing and the Special Meeting will be via Zoom, and members of the public can attend. Because legislation restricts members of the LTC from hearing from the public on the subject of the application once the formal Public Hearing is closed, there will not be an opportunity to address the Lasqueti Local Trust Committee in the Special Meeting.
