Is it Genocide?

Hi All!

I decided to do a bit of my own research about the definition of genocide and whether or not the use of this term is correct in reference to historical and present day acts towards Indigenous First Peoples.

According to the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and
Punishment of the Crime of Genocide
https://www.un.org/en/genocide-prevention/definition

Genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to
destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious
group, as such:
1) Killing members of the group;

Quote from John A  Macdonald: “The executions of the Indians ought to convince the Red Man that the White Man governs” (MacDonald, 1885).

Also: Residential school grave sites. Indigenous deaths by police. MMIW. Death stats that show that being Indigenous means you'll likely to live less long.

2) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the
group;

Quote from John A  Macdonald: “I have reason to believe that the agents as a whole … are doing all they can, by refusing food until the Indians are on the verge of starvation, to reduce the expense,” MacDonald to the House of Commons in 1882.

Residential School System. Indian Act. Over representation of Indigenous people in the carceral system.

3) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life
calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole
or in part;

Quote John A. Macdonald 1887: The great aim of our legislation has been to do away with the tribal system and assimilate the Indian people in all respects with the other inhabitants of the Dominion as speedily as they are fit to change.

Also: "I want to get rid of the Indian problem... Our objective is to continue until there is not an Indian that has not been absorbed into the body politic, and there is no Indian question, and no Indian Department". 1920

4) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;

Both Alberta and B.C. had Sexual Sterilization Acts. Indigenous women were over-represented in those who were co-erced to do this.   https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/sterilization-of-indigenous-women-in-canada

5) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

John A. Macdonald 1879 quote: When the school is on the reserve, the child lives with its parents, who are savages, and though he may learn to read and write, his habits and training mode of thought are Indian. He is simply a savage who can read and write. It has been strongly impressed upon myself, as head of the Department, that Indian children should be withdrawn as much as possible from the parental influence, and the only way to do that would be to put them in central training industrial schools where they will acquire the habits and modes of thought of white men. 1879

Residentials Schools, the Sixties Scoop, and Foster Care System that exists to this day.

Based on above, I think it is correct to use the term genocide
in relation to Canada's historical treatment of Indigenous First Peoples
since Colonization up to present day.
