I love this time of year. I love it that my garden is starting to show it's orange and yellow hues, I love it that seeds are dropping, the squash are becoming visible, that I am putting food by. I have worked for this and I feel a profound gratitude for this life where I get to do so.
Feeling all this love for Fall makes me want to share it. So let's all come together to celebrate the season to be thankful on Saturday October 4th at the Community Hall.
Harvests are coming in, pantries are filling with lines of colorful jars, wine is brewing, applesauce stewing, beans drying, grain is being ground into flour and pies are being baked. Agriculture is central to our way of life on Lasqueti and more and more we are working to feed ourselves.
Anyone who would like to participate is welcome to bring a garden display (paint us a picture of what you grow). If you want to market your goods then do that too. If you feel the competitive urge, bake an apple pie or a fruit crumble or a chocolate zucchini cake and we will have a contest and recognize the winners.
I imagine the the scents and crackle of autumn abundance bringing us together to talk about our gardens (every garden counts!!), what worked this year, what pests or diseases visited your space, what you dream of for next year, what you learned. We all have thoughts to share. We could trade seeds and taste test each others preserves and beers and wines. Also we could play together.
There will be a wood splitting competition, a woman's nail driving contest, a North vs Southend Lasquetian tug of war (choose your side you middle of the islanders) and whatever other fun we can organize.
