telephone and internet services on Lasqueti - now & future

Lasqueti internet Access Society (LIAS) is a member-driven non-profit organization that has established, with government funding and volunteer work by community members. LIAS has a current network of 11 Access Points that serve particular areas of the island.  Because of topography, and the fact that the radios that carry the signals are pretty much line-of-sight, not all areas of Lasqueti can be easily served. It costs approximately $10,000 to establish an Access Point, with its solar panels, batteries, radios, tower, etc.

There are a number of other options for internet connection on Lasqueti. They include cell or wireless services (Telus & Rogers, at least), satellite (Explornet) and Lasqueti Internet Access Society.  None of these is available everywhere on the island. Costs vary, for equipment and connection/data but are broadly comparable.

I've been working with a small group to see if LIAS can apply for funding to expand and upgrade its network on Lasqueti.    To help us in planning, we'd like to have information about what services people now use, and what they'd like to use in the future.   Please answer these questions and send them to  Peter Johnston  pjohnston [at] lasqueti [dot] ca    Your information will be used by this group, and will not be published or made public.
