Last November my friend Naomi Steinberg began a great life adventure. In order to feel space and time in a different way, she began a journey around the planet with no airplane, carrying the story of Goosefeather. She left her Vancouver home for California where a cargo ship took her 21 days across the Pacific Ocean to Australia. After a hop-skip-jump-bumpedity-bump through China, Japan, Russia, Norway, the UK, France and Switzerland with plenty a performance, workshop and creative collaboration, she is in the planning stages for the final leg of her journey back across North America and she wants to make a stop on Lasqueti part of it.
Naomi is an accomplished performer, storyteller, and site-specific installation artist. With over 14 years experience she knows how to seduce her audiences through a provocative mix of political thought and artistic content. She tells her stories in a unique voice, with an evocative gestural language. She believes strongly in the power of stories to catalyze change both personally and globally.
She has been awarded a BC Arts Council grant for her work as an solo artist as well as Canada Council, Citizenship and Immigration (Multiculturalism), BC Arts Council, City of Vancouver and Parks Board monies (among others), for her large scale community engagement initiatives, which she directed through the Vancouver Society of Storytelling. Basically, Naomi is amazing and I am delighted she is coming to share her skills and stories with those curious about what she has to offer.
Naomi will be giving a two-day storytelling workshop on Tuesday, December 1 and Wednesday the 2nd at the Arts Center Studio space. We will be working/playing from 10 am to 4 pm, with a one hour break for lunch. Snacks and lunch are included in the $175 cost.
Her workshops are a wonderful way to support community, foster listening, encourage imagination, model integrity, and broaden cultural understanding. If you want to increase your public speaking, self-confidence and memory, then consider a storytelling workshop!
On December 3, she will give a performance of her original production Goosefeather, which she has taken round the world.
Goosefeather tells the stories she collected over the course of many interviews with her Grandfather and tells of her explorations in the South of France where he lives. Venue and cost to be announced when finalized. You can learn more at goosefeather.ca
