press release from PRRD on Lasqueti 911
Here is the text of a press release issued today by PRRD, on the topic of Lasqueti 911, following yesterday's PRRD Committee of the Whole meeting.
Powell River, BC – March 13, 2015 – Lasqueti 911.
The Powell River Regional District has been the steward of the Lasqueti Island Volunteer Fire Department for 39 years and the fire protection service serves 484 property owners. The Regional District was advised by Telus in June 2014 that their pagers would become obsolete in March 2015. This left the Board of Directors in a challenging position to replace the current technology for fire alarm and emergency dispatch.
The Regional District will evaluate a situation report in an open meeting on March 19. A delegation from Electoral Area E (Lasqueti Island) is also expected to speak to the matter. The Directors will be tasked with determining policy for the short-term and long-term taking into consideration available technology.
In doing so, the Board will be respectful of its obligation to the volunteer firefighters and dispatchers in providing the appropriate resources for their protection and safety.
The Board will also bear in mind their responsibility for the health and protection of the tax payers and general public as well as mitigation of any alleged negligence charged against the Powell River Regional District.
