Fire Prevention Week

Day 3- Smoke Detectors

As part of Fire Prevention Week, we will be posting a daily fire safety message.  Today’s topic is Smoke Detectors.

Smoke Detectors save lives!  In order to ensure that your smoke detectors are working, they need to be routinely checked (once a month) and have their batteries changed twice a year (or more if needed).

Smoke detectors should be installed on every story of your house.  In hallways they should be placed as high as possible, so that they are set off when smoke first enters your house.

Every sleeping area should have its own smoke detector.  In bedrooms, ideal placement is on the ceiling just inside the door.

In order to work the best, bedroom doors should be kept shut when children are sleeping.  This way there is a barrier in case of a fire, as well forcing the smoke through the cracks of the door and up to the smoke detector.

Let’s work together to stay safe!
