Day 2- Fire Escape Plans

As part of Fire Prevention Week, we will be posting a daily fire safety message.  Today’s topic is Fire Escape Plans.

In the case of a fire at your house, everyone who lives in your house should be aware of how to get out of the house, and where to meet once out.  Exiting a room via a door is the safest, easiest way to get out of a room, but it is not always possible, so windows should have escape ladders.  Now that you have talked about your fire escape plan and your meeting place, it’s time to practice!

1.       Have children start in their bedrooms.

2.       Make the noise like a fire alarm (or press the test button on the smoke alarm to check it’s batteries at the same time!)

3.       The children should get out of their bed, and crawl (the room may have smoke in it remember) to the door.

4.       Have the children touch the door, starting at the bottom, with the back of their hands.  As they feel up the door, you can let them know if it is hot or not.  If it is not hot, they should use it to exit their room, and get to the nearest outside exit (still crawling)

5.       If the door is hot (I suggest practicing both), then the children must go to another exit.

6.       If it is a window, have the child open it (they need to be able to do it themselves), and practice throwing down the ladder.

7.       Once out of the house, the children should be instructed to run to the meeting place.  They need to stay there until a second person arrives to go call for help.

Thanks for practicing!

Let’s work together to stay safe!
