application for expansion of coal storage and transshipment on Texada Island

This is an email that Donald Gordon sent to his contact list about the Texada Island coal storage and shipment proposal, with the first paragraph as a later addition just for Lasqueti.

Donald suggests that we have a meeting of people interested in this issue. The hall is available any day and time except Sunday and Wednesday afternoons (and if it's important to meet then, we could arrange that). He's sailing to Lasqueti this windless long weekend, and should be here this coming week.  Please let me or Donald know if you are interested, and we'll schedule a meeting and let everyone know when and where it'll be.   - Peter

Hi folks,

So the clock is ticking on the 30 day period that we have all been given to respond to Lafarge's application to enlarge their coal facility on Texada, so that it will be able to have a 20 fold increase in its annual coal handling  (current max of 400,000 tonnes to 8 million tonnes in 5 years).

Here is the application.  If you are short of time or enthusiasm, click and start by reading Section 2.5.  This is the part when the engineering firm states that they will stop coal-dust laden water runoff from flowing directly into the sea by diverting it into the estuary and ditches.  Maybe this would be regarded as "world leading" if this was the year 1800 in the Yorkshire coal mines.  Read it to believe it:

We have two options:
1)Insert our collective heads into the nearest intertidal sand and pretend that this can't possibly be happening, and enjoy a last coal dust-free summer

Or
2) write a written response demanding a six month extension for necessary environmental reviews of coal dust impacts, health impact reviews ( as already proposed by Fraser Health for the Surrey end of this proposal), and any other reviews that you judge to be necessary.  Getting a delay is crucial to be able to stop it.

If you prefer Option 2, please send this email to anyone who may be interested in signing on to a letter, AND to anyone who may be interested helping to draft it. Of course, people can also draft their own letter.

I'm happy to continue to gather names and emails of those who want to add their names to the objection.  Anyone who wants can also be part of a Lasqueti high-speed working group.  I'll be getting to Lasqueti this week.  It would be great to have a meeting of anyone who is interested.

There are people on both Texada and Lasqueti who are ready to take action on this application , but they can't carry the ball alone.

Donald Gordon
