APC Meeting to discuss BC Hydro

Event Date:
Monday, November 7, 2011 - 7:00pm

APC Meeting to discuss BC Hydro Monday, November 7, Arts Centre, 7pm

BC Hydro recently wrote to the Local Trust Committee:

"Re: Lasquesti Island & BC Hydro's Remote Community Electrification Program

"Further to your conversation by email with Rhea Halfnigh LeFlufy, I am writing to confirm our understanding that Lasqueti Island is not interested in participating in the Remote Communities Electrification (RCE) Program and receiving electricity service from BC Hydro.

"In 2005 BC Hydro conducted a round of community interviews which indicated that there was little support for BC Hydro on the island. In 2010/2011 BC Hydro had furtner conversations with the Lasqueti Clean Energy Working Group and confirmed that there was insufficient support to engage the community further.

"This letter is to formally advise you that BC Hodro will not be pursuing further discussions with Lasqueti Island as part of the RCE program.

"It is my understanding that the Islands Trust and the Powell River Regional District support BC Hydro's position."

Although the Lasqueti Trust Committee thinks there is little interest, it felt that more than just one Trustee and the regional director should be formally consulted. The Lasqueti Trust Committee has asked the Advisory Planning Commission to determine whether there is indeed little interest in further discussions with BC Hydro about Lasqueti participating in the Remote Communities Electrification (RCE) Program.
BC Hydro apparently told the Green Energy Working Group that, under the RCE Program, they would install a large diesel generator and provide electricity service to anyone who installed proper wiring connection to their home or business.

The APC wants to know if there is in fact little interest in pursuing discussions with BC Hydro. To this end, we ask Lasqueti residents and landowners to contact one of the APC members, preferably in writing, or attend a public meeting, scheduled for Monday, November  7 at 7pm at the Arts Centre.

Note from Peter J:  Some information about RCE Program can be found at   www.bchydro.com/energy_in_bc/remote_community_electrification.html
It seems to be only for communities that are beyond the grid, so diesel generators probably isn't an interim solution..
