Climate Challenge Local Food Potluck and Workshop
The Great Lasqueti Challenge of 2010! We are officially launching The Great Lasqueti Challenge. I invite you all to join the Challenge to reduce our carbon footprints this year. It will include a emissions/actions log to help us keep track of changes we’re making towards a less polluting future on Lasqueti and series of evening local food potlucks and workshops. The Challenge begins this Wednesday, January 27th at theCommunity Hall and will include: 6:00-6:45– Local Food Potluck – Bring a dish of all-local, seasonal food. Pick from your garden or greenhouse. Hunt, gather and grow. This is part of the challenge. What is the reality of food availability here and now? 6:45- 7:30 – Check in circle about the Challenge, personal goals, obstacles and successes. How to use the emissions/action log. 7:30-9:30 – Workshop presentations and brainstorming discussions. The focus of this first workshop is Water. Future workshops will focus on Heating efficiently with wood, Local Food Production, Natural/Green Building, and Alternative Transport. At each of these Workshops there will be local Lasqueti presenters on the topic who will share their skills and knowledge. As well there will be lots of time for brainstorming together To get us thinking about this month’s topic…. What does water have to do with climate change? Scientists are expecting more doughts in the summers, heavier rain in the winters and salination of ground water due to rising sea levels. It is also well understood that we need to grow more of our own food to live sustainably here on the islands, and water for irrigation is an issue to address. Also, we use gas powered pumps to move water around our properties and use propane to heat up our water. So, as it rains and rains and drizzles and pours, think about your water needs and your system. What are you questions? What are your ideas? What can we do and how can we work together to do it? See you there! If you can't come to this event, but would like to participate, let me know and I will mail you the Emissions Log. Jen Gobby
