winter eating from spring and summer planting

WINTER AND (NEXT) SPRING EATING FROM SPRING & SUMMER PLANTING

Last spring I had an article in the Isle & Times about things you can plant in the spring and summer that will give food all winter and into the next spring from the garden (as opposed to potatoes, squash, onions, etc., that are stored over the winter). Here is the schedule of what you can plant when:

  • Leeks, celeriac, parsley -- best to start in April, but early May is probably not too late.
  • Early June -- Brussels sprouts.
  • Mid to late June -- Overwintering broccoli, cabbage, parsnips.
  • Early July -- carrots, beets, rutabagas, endive and radicchio, chard, kale, kohlrabi, overwintered cauliflower.
  • Early August -- arugula, fall and winter lettuce, Asian greens and radishes, spinach, overwintered onions and scallions, corn salad.
  • Late August to mid-September -- corn salad, cilantro, arugula, winter lettuce.
Enjoy!
