received on March 1/11 requesting information from the Islands Trust in regards to Sisters Islets Lighthouse:

I am a heritage consultant with Donald Luxton & Associates in Vancouver. We are currently conducting a study of three lighthouses in B.C. for Parks Canada. One of the lighthouses in our study is the Sisters Islets Lighthouse. We were hoping to gather information from you regarding the local and municipal perspective on the Sisters Islets Lighthouse's historical and present-day significance. Would you be able to answer a few questions for us regarding the Sisters Islets Lighthouse? The information will be incorporated into our study, and if you prefer, your identity will remain anonymous. If possible, we would like to have this information by Tuesday, March 8.

Please find our questions below. If you prefer to answer these questions over the phone, please feel free to contact either Donald Luxton, Megan Faulkner, or R.J. McCulloch at 604-688-1216. We are in the office most weekdays from 9-5.

1. How has the Sisters Islets Lighthouse contributed to the history of the community/trust area? Please be as specific as possible.

2. What significant historical events or persons in the community/trust area are associated with the Sisters Islets Lighthouse?

3. What role does the Sisters Islets Lighthouse play in the community/trust area today?

4. Did the de-staffing of the Sisters Islets Lighthouse affect the community/trust area? If so, in what ways?

5. Do you think lighthouses are important to the history of the community/trust area? To British Columbia? To Canada?  If so, in what ways?

Lastly, if you know of someone else who would be more appropriate to contact regarding the history and significance of this lighthouse other than yourself, would you please forward this email to that person? Or let us know who we should contact?

Thank you very much, we sincerely appreciate your help in uncovering the history and importance of B.C.'s lighthouses!

received March 4/11 in response to Islands Trust request to know the purpose of the study:

Thank you so much for your email. Putting this on the agenda would be great as we seem to be having a tough time gathering any information from the local community. The project is a lighthouse study for Parks Canada where we are looking at the heritage, community, and architectural value of 3 lighthouses in B.C. From the community/municipality, we are trying to gleam information from people as to what lighthouses, in this case specifically Sisters Islets Lighthouse, mean to the community, if they are valued as significant parts of the history of an area, of B.C.? The three lighthouses we are looking at have all been automated. Each lighthouse has a rich history (how and when it was established, events that occurred at or around the lighthouse, the lighthouse keepers who staffed the lights, etc.) but it is very important for us to look at lighthouses now in the present day context in order to understand whether they have any current significance or are currently appreciated by the surrounding community. Sisters Islets Lighthouse is tricky because it is situated on the largest of the Sisters Islets, about 3km west of Lasqueti. I have attached a photo and a map below so you have a better idea of what the lighthouse looks like and where it is.

Thanks so much for your help.

received March 9/11 in response to Islands Trust request for time extension for community to respond:

I understand the need for a time extension to gather the information and I really appreciate the community's willingness to respond to our questions. The reason we offered such a short time period is because this entire project only began March 1 and has a deadline of March 31. I will be sending a draft report to Parks Canada on Tuesday the 15th, but could incorporate the information from the community into the final draft, which will be sent on March 31. Would it be possible to obtain their comments by the week of March 21? That way we would have time to incorporate them into the report.

I really appreciate your help on this issue, the Sisters Islets Lighthouse is a remarkable building with a very rich history, but because of its location it has been so difficult to establish a community. Any input from the Lasqueti community would be of great value.

Thanks so much again, and please let me know if there is anything I can do or if there are any additional questions you need answered.

Megan
